आपृच्चे त्वाम् महा राज सर्वेषाम् ईश्वरः असि नः ।
प्रस्थितम् दण्डक अरण्यम् पश्य त्वम् कुशलेन माम् ॥ ॥२-३४-२२॥
Āpṛcce tvām mahā rāja sarveṣām īśvaraḥ asi naḥ |
Prasthitam daṇḍaka araṇyam paśya tvam kuśalena mām ॥2-34-22॥
Translation
"I ask your leave, O Great King. You are the Lord/Master of us all. Look upon me with a benevolent gaze as I set forth for the Dandaka forest."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे महाराज! मैं आपसे जाने की अनुमति मांगता हूँ। आप हम सबके स्वामी हैं। दंडक वन के लिए प्रस्थान करते हुए मुझे आप मंगलमयी (स्नेहपूर्ण) दृष्टि से देखिये।"
English Commentary
Rama's request is formal yet deeply emotional. By stating sarveṣām īśvaraḥ asi naḥ (You are the Master of us all), Rama reinforces Dasaratha's authority. He validates the exile as a legitimate command from his Master, thereby absolving the King of the feeling that he is being coerced by Kaikeyi against his will. Rama accepts the authority, restoring the King's dignity. The request paśya tvam kuśalena mām is profound. It means "look at me with kindness/auspiciousness." Rama asks his father not to look at him with guilt or horror, but with a blessing for safety. He wants the final visual exchange to be empowering, not debilitating.

राम यहाँ राजा से 'आपृच्चे' (विदा मांगता हूँ / अनुमति लेता हूँ) कहते हैं। वे राजा को याद दिलाते हैं कि 'ईश्वरः असि नः' (आप हम सबके स्वामी हैं)। इसका अर्थ है कि वनवास केवल कैकेयी का वरदान नहीं, बल्कि राजा की आज्ञा (चाहे विवशता में हो) है, और राम उसका सम्मान एक स्वामी के आदेश की तरह कर रहे हैं। राम कहते हैं—'पश्य त्वम् कुशलेन माम्'। यानी, "मुझे रोते हुए मत देखिये, बल्कि मुझे आशीर्वाद देती हुई शुभ दृष्टि से देखिये।" राम चाहते हैं कि विदाई का अंतिम क्षण विषाद का नहीं, बल्कि आशीर्वाद ('कुशल') का हो। वे राजा को अपराधबोध से मुक्त करना चाहते हैं।
