नव पञ्च च वर्षाणि वनवासे विहृत्य ते ।
पुनः पादौ ग्रहीष्यामि प्रतिज्ञान्ते नराधिपः ॥ ॥२-३४-२९॥
Nava pañca ca varṣāṇi vanavāse vihṛtya te |
Punaḥ pādau grahīṣyāmi pratijñānte narādhipaḥ ॥2-34-29॥
Translation
"O Lord of Men! After spending fourteen (nine and five) years in forest exile, at the end of the vow, I shall clasp your feet again."

"हे नराधिप! चौदह (नौ और पांच) वर्ष वनवास में व्यतीत करके, प्रतिज्ञा पूरी होने पर मैं पुनः आपके चरणों का स्पर्श करूँगा।"
English Commentary
Rama tries to frame the exile as a temporary phase rather than a permanent loss. He specifically mentions the duration—fourteen years—to give the grief a time limit. The promise punaḥ pādau grahīṣyāmi (I will hold your feet again) is a lifeline thrown to the drowning King. It implies, "I will survive, and I will come back to you." Rama is trying to give Dasaratha a goal: to stay alive until his return. It is an optimistic pledge meant to counter the King's fatalistic despair.

राम पिता को आशा की किरण दिखाते हैं। वे वनवास को 'मृत्यु' नहीं, बल्कि एक सीमित अवधि ('नव पञ्च च वर्षाणि' = 14 वर्ष) की यात्रा मानते हैं। वे पिता को आश्वस्त करते हैं कि वे लौटेंगे। 'पुनः पादौ ग्रहीष्यामि' (मैं फिर से आपके चरण स्पर्श करूँगा)—यह वादा दशरथ को जीवित रखने के लिए है। राम जानते हैं कि उनके वियोग में पिता के प्राण संकट में हैं, इसलिए वे मिलन की उम्मीद बांध रहे हैं। वे यह जताना चाहते हैं कि यह 'विदाई' सदा के लिए नहीं है, केवल एक अंतराल है।
