दुष्करम् क्रियते पुत्र सर्वथा राघव तया ।
मत्प्रियार्थम् प्रियाम्स्त्यक्त्वा यद्यासि विजनम् वनम् ॥ ॥२-३४-३५॥
Duṣkaram kriyate putra sarvathā rāghava tayā |
Matpriyārtham priyāmstyakhtvā yadyāsi vijanam vanam ॥2-34-35॥
Translation
"O Son Raghava! You are doing an exceedingly difficult deed by going to the lonely forest, abandoning your dear ones for the sake of my pleasure (to keep my word)."

"हे पुत्र राघव! तुम मेरे प्रिय (वचन/सत्य) के लिए अपने प्रियजनों (माता-पिता, राज्य, सुख) को त्यागकर जो निर्जन वन में जा रहे हो, यह तुम सर्वथा बहुत कठिन ('दुष्कर') कार्य कर रहे हो।"
English Commentary
Dasaratha validates the magnitude of Rama's sacrifice. He calls it duṣkaram (hard to do/difficult). He recognizes the asymmetry of the situation: Rama is sacrificing his own priyān (dear things—comfort, family, kingdom) for the sake of mat-priyārtham (Dasaratha's good/truth). The contrast is sharp: Rama is leaving a loving home for a vijanam vanam (uninhabited forest). By acknowledging this, Dasaratha admits the injustice of the situation while marveling at his son's capacity for self-abnegation. It is a tribute to Rama's filial piety from the very person who is forcing him to prove it.

राजा दशरथ राम के त्याग की महानता को स्वीकार करते हैं। वे कहते हैं, 'दुष्करम् क्रियते'—तुम वह कर रहे हो जो करना असंभव है। राम 'मत्प्रियार्थम्' (मेरे हित/वचन के लिए) अपने 'प्रियान्' (प्रिय वस्तुओं/लोगों) को छोड़ रहे हैं। 'विजनम् वनम्' (जनशून्य वन) में जाना कोई छोटी बात नहीं है। राजा को ग्लानि है कि उनके कारण राम को इतना बड़ा बलिदान देना पड़ रहा है। वे राम के कार्य को केवल आज्ञापालन नहीं, बल्कि एक असाधारण और कठिन तपस्या मानते हैं। यह श्लोक राम के प्रति राजा के सम्मान और अपनी विवशता से उपजे अपराधबोध को दर्शाता है।
