Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न चैतन्मे प्रियम् पुत्र शपे सत्येन राघव ।
छन्नया छलितस्त्वस्नु स्त्रुया छन्नाग्निकल्पया ॥२-३४-३६॥
Na caitanme priyam putra śape satyena rāghava । Channayā chalitastvasmi striyā channāgnikalpayā ॥ ॥2-34-36॥
Translation
O son, O Raghava! I swear by the Truth that this exile is not pleasing to me. I have been deceived by this woman (Kaikeyi), who concealed her true intentions like a fire hidden under ashes.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे रघुनन्दन पुत्र! मैं सत्य की शपथ लेकर कहता हूँ कि यह (वनवास) मुझे प्रिय नहीं है। मैं इस छिपी हुई अग्नि के समान स्त्री (कैकेयी) द्वारा, जिसने अपने भाव छिपा रखे थे, छला गया हूँ।
English Commentary
Here, King Dasharatha expresses his utter helplessness and guilt. He desperately wants Rama to know that the order of exile does not stem from his own will. The metaphor describing Kaikeyi as channagnikalpaya (like a fire covered by ashes) is profound. Just as a hidden fire appears dormant but burns destructively when touched, Kaikeyi appeared loving on the surface for years, only to reveal a destructive nature at this critical moment. Dasharatha swears by 'Truth' (Satya)—the very ideal Rama is trying to protect—to assure his son that his heart remains broken by this deception.

यहाँ महाराज दशरथ की विवशता और आत्म-ग्लानि चरम सीमा पर है। वे राम को विश्वास दिलाना चाहते हैं कि वनवास का आदेश उनका नहीं, बल्कि परिस्थितियों का है। कैकेयी के लिए 'छन्नाग्निकल्पया' (राख में दबी आग) विशेषण का प्रयोग अत्यंत मार्मिक है। जैसे राख के नीचे दबी आग ऊपर से शांत दिखती है पर स्पर्श करने पर जला देती है, वैसे ही कैकेयी ने अब तक प्रेम का दिखावा किया, किन्तु अंततः महाराज के हृदय को जला दिया। दशरथ यह स्पष्ट कर रहे हैं कि वे राजा के रूप में नहीं, बल्कि एक छल-ग्रसित पति और पिता के रूप में बोल रहे हैं।
