न चैतदाश्चर्यतमम् यत्तज्ज्येष्ठस्सुतो मम ।
अपानृतकथम् पुत्र पितरम् कर्तुमिच्छसि ॥२-३४-३८॥
Na caitadāścaryatamam yattajjyeṣṭhassuto mama । Apānṛtakatham putra pitaram kartumicchasi ॥ ॥2-34-38॥
Translation
O son! It is not the greatest surprise that you, being my eldest son, wish to make your father free from the stigma of falsehood.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे पुत्र! यह कोई आश्चर्य की बात नहीं है कि तुम मेरे ज्येष्ठ पुत्र होकर, अपने पिता को झूठा होने (असत्य) के कलंक से बचाना चाहते हो।
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the Vedic ideal of a son (Putra). Traditionally, a son is one who delivers his parents from the hell named 'Put'. Dasharatha remarks that for a soul as noble as Rama, prioritizing the father’s integrity over personal comfort is natural, not surprising. By wanting to make his father apanrita-katham (one whose word is not untrue), Rama proves his worthiness not just as a king, but as a dutiful son. It is a heartbreaking mixture of a father's grief and his validation of his son's superior moral standing.

इस श्लोक में पुत्र के धर्म की परिभाषा है। शास्त्रों के अनुसार, 'पुत्र' वह है जो पिता को 'पुत्' नामक नरक से बचाए। दशरथ कहते हैं कि राम जैसे उत्तम पुत्र से यही अपेक्षा थी। राम 'ज्येष्ठ' केवल जन्म से नहीं, बल्कि गुणों और धर्म-पालन में भी हैं। दशरथ को पीड़ा है, किन्तु साथ ही गर्व भी है कि उनका पुत्र रघुकुल की 'प्राण जाए पर वचन न जाए' की रीति को निभाने के लिए इतना तत्पर है। यह राम के चरित्र का अनुमोदन है।
