Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अथ रामः तथा श्रुत्वा पितुर् आर्तस्य भाषितम् ।
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा दीनो वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥२-३४-३९॥
Atha rāmaḥ tathā śrutvā pitur ārtasya bhāṣitam । Lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā dīno vacanam abravīt ॥ ॥2-34-39॥
Translation
Then, hearing the words of his distressed father, Rama, standing alongside his brother Lakshmana, spoke these words humbly and sorrowfully.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अपने दुखी पिता के ऐसे वचन सुनकर, भाई लक्ष्मण के साथ खड़े राम ने अत्यंत दीन (विनीत/भावुक) होकर ये वचन कहे।
English Commentary
This verse sets the emotional stage for Rama's response. The word dina here does not mean weak or poor, but rather 'humble,' 'pained,' or 'sorrowful' in the face of his father's agony. Despite his steely resolve to leave, Rama is deeply affected by Dasharatha's suffering. The presence of Lakshmana indicates that the younger brother is witnessing this pivotal exchange. It serves to humanize Rama; he is not an emotionless stoic but a loving son who performs his duty despite the immense emotional cost.

यहाँ राम की मनःस्थिति का वर्णन है। यद्यपि राम संकल्प में दृढ़ हैं, तथापि पिता का दुख देखकर वे 'दीन' (भावुक और विनीत) हो गए हैं। वे अहंकार या क्रोध से नहीं, बल्कि करुणा से भरे हुए हैं। लक्ष्मण का साथ होना यह दर्शाता है कि राम अकेले नहीं हैं, और लक्ष्मण भी इस धर्म-संकट के साक्षी हैं। वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ स्पष्ट करते हैं कि राम का वनवास स्वीकार करना पत्थर दिल होकर लिया गया निर्णय नहीं है, बल्कि यह एक संवेदनशील पुत्र का भारी मन से लिया गया निर्णय है।
