Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्राप्स्यामि यान् अद्य गुणान् को मे श्वस्तान् प्रदास्यति ।
अपक्रमणम् एव अतः सर्व कामैः अहम् वृणे ॥२-३४-४०॥
Prāpsyāmi yān adya guṇān ko me śvastān pradāsyati । Apakramaṇam eva ataḥ sarva kāmaiḥ aham vṛṇe ॥ ॥2-34-40॥
Translation
Who will grant me tomorrow the merits/virtues that I can obtain today? Therefore, I choose departure (exile) over all desires and pleasures.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आज (वन जाने से) मुझे जो पुण्य/गुण प्राप्त होंगे, उन्हें कल मुझे कौन देगा? (अर्थात् कल जीवन रहे न रहे)। इसलिए, मैं समस्त भोगों की अपेक्षा वन जाने को ही चुनता हूँ।
English Commentary
This illustrates Rama’s philosophy of immediacy in Dharma. He posits a rhetorical question: 'Who can guarantee that I will be able to earn this merit tomorrow?' Life is uncertain, and the opportunity to uphold truth is fleeting. If he delays due to attachment, he risks losing the chance to fulfill his duty. Rama prioritizes Apakramanam (departure/renunciation) over all worldly desires, teaching that spiritual merit and duty must be seized the moment they present themselves, rather than postponed for a convenient future.

यह श्लोक राम के जीवन दर्शन का मूल है। राम 'शुभस्य शीघ्रम्' में विश्वास रखते हैं। वे जानते हैं कि धर्म पालन का अवसर नश्वर है। यदि वे आज मोहवश रुक गए, और कल मृत्यु आ गई या पिता की बात झूठी हो गई, तो आज का पुण्य अवसर हाथ से निकल जाएगा। राम भौतिक सुखों (सर्व कामैः) की तुलना में धर्म और त्याग (अपक्रमणम्) को अधिक मूल्यवान मानते हैं। यह भविष्य की अनिश्चितता के प्रति एक आध्यात्मिक दृष्टिकोण है—जो सही है, उसे अभी करो।
