आलोक्य तु महा प्राज्ञः परम आकुल चेतसम् ।
रामम् एव अनुशोचन्तम् सूतः प्रान्जलिर् आसदत् ॥ ॥२-३४-४॥
Ālokya tu mahā prājñaḥ parama ākula cetasam |
Rāmam eva anuśocantam sūtaḥ prāñjalir āsadat ॥2-34-4॥
Translation
Observing the King to be in a state of extreme mental agitation and grieving solely for Rama, the very wise Sumantra approached him with joined palms.

महाबुद्धिमान सुमन्त्र ने राजा को अत्यंत व्याकुल चित्त वाला और केवल राम के लिए ही शोक करता हुआ देखकर, हाथ जोड़कर उनके समीप गमन किया।
English Commentary
Sumantra is described here as mahā prājñaḥ (greatly wise). His wisdom lies in his ability to read the room and understand the depth of the King's psychology. He recognizes that Dasaratha's ākula cetasam (agitated mind) has a singular focus: he is mourning for Rama and Rama alone. There is no other concern in the Emperor's mind.
Approaching with prāñjalir (folded hands) signifies deep reverence and submission. It is a gesture of non-aggression and plea. Sumantra realizes he is in a delicate position; he is the messenger bridging the gap between the son who must leave and the father who cannot bear to let him go. His physical posture reflects his intent to be gentle with the broken King. The verse emphasizes the isolation of the King in his grief, where his entire consciousness is collapsed into a single point of suffering: the loss of his son.

यहाँ सुमन्त्र को 'महाप्राज्ञ' (अत्यंत बुद्धिमान) कहा गया है। उनकी बुद्धिमत्ता इसमें है कि वे राजा की स्थिति को तुरंत भांप लेते हैं। वे समझते हैं कि राजा का यह 'परम आकुल' (अत्यधिक बेचैनी) व्यवहार केवल एक ही कारण से है—राम। राजा अन्य किसी राजकाज या समस्या के बारे में नहीं सोच रहे, उनका पूरा अस्तित्व 'रामम् एव अनुशोचन्तम्' (राम का ही शोक मनाने) में केंद्रित है।
