Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
येन् सम्स्तम्भनीयोऽयम् सर्वो बाष्पगLओ जनः ।
स त्वम् पुरुषशार्दूल किमर्थम् विक्रियाम् गतः ॥२-३४-५४॥
Yena samstambhanīyo'yam sarvo bāṣpagalo janaḥ । Sa tvam puruṣaśārdūla kimartham vikriyām gataḥ ॥ ॥2-34-54॥
Translation
You, who ought to be stabilizing/consoling all these people choking with tears—O Tiger among men, why have you yourself succumbed to such agitation?
हिंदी अनुवाद
जिसको (अर्थात् आपको) इस आंसुओं में डूबे हुए समस्त जन-समुदाय को संभालना/ढाढस बंधाना चाहिए, हे पुरुषसिंह! वही आप स्वयं इस प्रकार विकार (अत्यधिक शोक) को क्यों प्राप्त हो गए हैं?
English Commentary
Rama challenges Dasharatha to rise to his station. As the King, Dasharatha is the pillar of the state; if the pillar crumbles, the structure falls. The citizens are weeping, and it is the King's job to console them (samstambhaniya), not to lead the mourning. Addressing him as a 'Tiger among men' (Purushashardula), Rama questions why he has allowed emotion to overpower his regal nature (vikriyam gatah).
हिंदी टीका
राम दशरथ को उनके राजधर्म की याद दिला रहे हैं। राजा प्रजा का पिता होता है। जब प्रजा रो रही है, तो राजा का कर्तव्य उन्हें चुप कराना है, न कि स्वयं टूट जाना। 'पुरुषशार्दूल' (पुरुषों में सिंह) विशेषण का प्रयोग दशरथ के सोए हुए स्वाभिमान को जगाने के लिए है। राम कह रहे हैं कि एक 'सिंह' को इस तरह विलाप करना शोभा नहीं देता।
