Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तत् अद्य न एव अनघ राज्यम् अव्ययम् ।
न सर्व कामान् न सुखम् न मैथिलीम् ।
न जीवितम् त्वाम् अनृतेन योजयन् ।
वृणीय सत्यम् व्रतम् अस्तु ते तथा ॥२-३४-५८॥
Tat adya na eva anagha rājyam avyayam । Na sarva kāmān na sukham na maithilīm । Na jīvitam tvām anṛtena yojayan । Vṛṇīya satyam vratam astu te tathā ॥ ॥2-34-58॥
Translation
Therefore, O Sinless One, rather than associating you with untruth, I would not choose the eternal kingdom, nor all desires, nor happiness, nor Maithili, nor even life itself. I choose Truth alone; let your vow remain intact.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे अनघ! आपको असत्य से जोड़ने (झूठा बनाने) की अपेक्षा, मैं न तो उस अविनाशी राज्य को, न समस्त कामनाओं को, न सुख को, न मैथिली (सीता) को और न ही जीवन को चुनूँगा। मैं (केवल) सत्य का वरण करता हूँ; आपका व्रत (वचन) वैसा ही बना रहे।
English Commentary
This is the definitive statement of value. Rama weighs the entire world—kingdom, pleasure, his beloved wife Sita, and his very life—against his father’s integrity (Satyam), and finds them all lighter. He refuses to 'yoke' (yojayan) his father to untruth. He declares that preserving Dasharatha’s vow is worth the cost of everything else he holds dear. It is the ultimate affirmation of filiality and Dharma.

यह राम के संकल्प की पराकाष्ठा है। वे अपनी प्राथमिकताओं की सूची बनाते हैं: राज्य, सुख, सीता, और स्वयं का जीवन—ये सब 'पिता के सत्य' के सामने तुच्छ हैं। राम कहते हैं कि यदि पिता झूठे साबित हुए, तो राम को जीवित रहने या सीता को साथ रखने का भी कोई अधिकार नहीं है। यह त्याग की वह ऊंचाई है जहाँ व्यक्ति अपने अस्तित्व (जीबितम्) को भी दांव पर लगा देता है।
