का प्रीती राज्यलाभेन तव देवि भविष्यति ।
तादृशम् त्वममर्यादम् कर्म कर्तुम् चिकीर्षसि ॥ ॥२-३५-१३॥
Kā prītī rājyalābhena tava devi bhaviṣyati । Tādṛśam tvamamaryādam karma kartum cikīrṣasi ॥ ॥2-35-13॥
Translation
O Queen, what happiness will you possibly derive from gaining the kingdom, seeing that you desire to perform such a limit-crossing and sinful deed?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे देवि! ऐसा मर्यादा-शून्य कर्म करके, राज्य प्राप्त होने पर भी तुम्हें कौन सा सुख या संतोष मिलेगा?
English Commentary
Sumantra poses a rhetorical and philosophical question regarding the utility of power gained through sin. He challenges Kaikeyi to define the "happiness" she expects to find at the end of this destructive path. The verse highlights the concept of a Pyrrhic victory—where the cost of winning destroys the value of the prize. By calling the act amaryadam (boundless sin) again, Sumantra implies that such actions pollute the mind, making true enjoyment of the rewards impossible. It is a critique of ambition that blinds one to the consequences of immorality.

सुमंत्र यहाँ कैकेयी के विवेक को झकझोरने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं। वह पूछते हैं कि जिस 'राज्य-लाभ' के लिए वह इतना बड़ा पाप कर रही हैं, क्या वह वास्तव में उसे सुख देगा? पाप की नींव पर खड़ा महल कभी शांति नहीं दे सकता। 'मर्यादा' शब्द का पुनः प्रयोग यह दर्शाता है कि यह कार्य कुल और समाज के नियमों के विरुद्ध है। सुमंत्र यह जताना चाहते हैं कि अंतरात्मा की शांति खोकर प्राप्त की गई सत्ता केवल दुख और पश्चाताप का कारण बनती है, 'प्रीति' (प्रसन्नता) का नहीं।
