Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
आश्चर्यमिव पश्यामि यस्यास्ते वृत्तमीदृशम् ।
आचरन्त्या न विदृता सद्यो भवति मेदिनी ॥ ॥२-३५-१४॥
Āścaryamiva paśyāmi yasyāste vṛttamīdṛśam । Ācarantyā na vidṛtā sadyo bhavati medinī ॥ ॥2-35-14॥
Translation
I view it as a great wonder that the earth does not instantly split open while you engage in such conduct.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुझे महान आश्चर्य हो रहा है कि ऐसा (पापपूर्ण) आचरण करने वाली तुम्हारे लिए यह पृथ्वी तत्काल फट क्यों नहीं जाती (तुम्हें अपने में समा लेने के लिए)।
English Commentary
This verse invokes a powerful trope in Hindu epics: the Earth Mother (Medini) cannot bear the weight of excessive sin and should ideally split open to swallow the sinner. Sumantra expresses shock (aashcharyam) that the natural order hasn't violently reacted to Kaikeyi's transgression yet. It reflects his belief that her actions are crimes against nature itself, not just political maneuvers. The commentary suggests that the magnitude of her cruelty is so great that the stability of the physical world feels unnatural in the face of such moral turbulence.

भारतीय पौराणिक कथाओं और मुहावरों में, जब पाप का भार असहनीय हो जाता है, तो धरती के फटने की बात कही जाती है। सुमंत्र का क्रोध यहाँ चरम पर है। वह कहते हैं कि कैकेयी का पाप इतना घोर है कि प्रकृति को भी इसे सहन नहीं करना चाहिए। यह केवल एक अलंकार नहीं, बल्कि सुमंत्र की हताशा और विस्मय की अभिव्यक्ति है कि इतना बड़ा अधर्म होने पर भी विनाशकारी दैवीय दंड तुरंत क्यों नहीं मिल रहा। यह दर्शाता है कि कैकेयी का कार्य मानवीय क्षमा के परे है।
