ततो जृम्भस्य शयने विरुताद्भूरिवर्चसा ।
पितुस्ते विदितो भावः स तत्र बहुधाऽहसत् ॥ ॥२-३५-२०॥
Tato jṛmbhasya śayane virutādbhūrivarcasā । Pituste vidito bhāvaḥ sa tatra bahudhā'hasat ॥ ॥2-35-20॥
Translation
Then, while lying in bed, your glorious father understood the meaning of a creature's sound (cry/speech), and he laughed heartily at it.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनन्तर, एक दिन शय्या पर लेटे हुए तुम्हारे महातेजस्वी पिता ने (एक चींटी या पक्षी के) शब्द (विरुत) से उसका भाव समझ लिया और वे बहुत जोर से हँस पड़े।
English Commentary
The trigger event occurs: King Ashwapati laughs in bed after overhearing an amusing animal conversation. The text describes him as bhurivarcasa (of great splendor), emphasizing that his actions were noble, not mocking of his wife. However, laughing while in bed with one's spouse without explaining the reason often breeds suspicion. This moment illustrates the disconnect between the King's private experience (via the boon) and the Queen's perception—a misunderstanding that leads to her cruel ultimatum in the following verses.

घटना का मुख्य मोड़ यहाँ आता है। राजा शय्या पर अपनी पत्नी के साथ थे, तभी उन्होंने किसी जीव (प्रायः कथाओं में चींटी का उल्लेख आता है) की बात सुनी और उन्हें हँसी आ गई। यह हँसी निर्दोष थी और उस जीव के संवाद पर आधारित थी। परंतु, यह हँसी एकांत में पत्नी की उपस्थिति में हुई थी, जिससे गलतफहमी पैदा हुई। सुमंत्र यह बता रहे हैं कि कैसे एक सहज क्रिया को अहंकारी व्यक्ति (कैकेयी की माँ) अपने अपमान के रूप में ले लेती है।
