तत्र ते जननी क्रुद्धा मृत्युपाशमभीप्सती ।
हासम् ते नृपते सौम्य जिज्ञासामीति भाब्रवीत् ॥ ॥२-३५-२१॥
Tatra te jananī kruddhā mṛtyupāśamabhīpsatī । Hāsam te nṛpate saumya jijñāsāmīti cābravīt ॥ ॥2-35-21॥
Translation
Thereupon your mother became angry and, wishing for the noose of death, spoke: "O gentle King, I wish to know the cause of your laughter."
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब तुम्हारी माता क्रोधित हो उठीं और मृत्यु का पाश (फंदा) अपने गले में डालने की इच्छा करती हुई (आत्महत्या की धमकी या राजा के प्राण संकट में डालने वाली हठ) बोलीं—"हे सौम्य राजा, मैं आपकी उस हँसी का कारण जानना चाहती हूँ।"
English Commentary
This verse reveals the cruelty of Kaikeyi's mother. Upon seeing the King laugh, she demands to know the reason. The phrase mrityupasham-abhipsati (desiring the death noose) is chilling. It implies she persisted in her demand even after knowing (or being warned) that revealing the secret would cost the King his life due to the conditions of his boon. She valued her curiosity and ego over her husband's survival. Sumantra draws a direct line to Kaikeyi: "You are doing exactly what she did—sacrificing your husband for a trivial desire."

यहाँ 'मृत्युपाशमभीप्सती' (मृत्यु का फंदा चाहने वाली) वाक्यांश अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। इसके दो अर्थ हैं: या तो वह आत्महत्या की धमकी दे रही थी, या वह राजा से वह रहस्य पूछ रही थी जिसे बताने पर राजा की मृत्यु निश्चित थी (वरदान की शर्त थी कि रहस्य बताने पर राजा मर जाएगा)। संदर्भानुसार, वह राजा को ऐसी स्थिति में डाल रही थी जहाँ मृत्यु निश्चित थी। सुमंत्र समानता दिखा रहे हैं: जैसे तुम्हारी माँ ने अपनी जिज्ञासा शांत करने के लिए पति के जीवन की परवाह नहीं की, वैसे ही तुम अपनी महत्वाकांक्षा के लिए दशरथ के प्राण ले रही हो।
