मनः समीक्षमाणश्च सूतो दशरथस्य सः ।
कम्पयन्निव कैकेय्या हृदयम् वाक्छरैश्शितैः ॥ ॥२-३५-३॥
Manaḥ samīkṣamāṇaśca sūto daśarathasya saḥ । Kampayanniva kaikeyyā hṛdayam vākcharaiśśitaiḥ ॥ ॥2-35-3॥
Translation
That charioteer of Dasharatha (Sumantra), perceiving the King's mind, spoke as if shaking Kaikeyi's heart with sharp arrows of words.
हिंदी अनुवाद
दशरथ के उस सारथी (सुमन्त्र) ने राजा के मन की बात को समझते हुए, अपने तीखे वाक-बाणों से कैकेयी के हृदय को कंपाते हुए से (कहा)।
English Commentary
Sumantra acts here as the voice of the silenced King. Understanding Dasharatha's helplessness (manaḥ samīkṣamāṇaśca), he takes it upon himself to deliver the rebuke the King cannot. The metaphor of "word-arrows" (vākcharai) implies that his speech was calculated to pierce and hurt. He intended to shake Kaikeyi out of her obstinacy through fear and shame. It is an act of loyalty where the minister fights the battle the King has lost.

यहाँ सुमन्त्र को केवल सारथी नहीं, बल्कि राजा के मन को पढ़ने वाला (मनः समीक्षमाणश्च) कहा गया है। वे जानते थे कि राजा कैकेयी को क्या कहना चाहते हैं पर कह नहीं पा रहे। इसलिए, सुमन्त्र राजा की वाणी बन गए। रूपक अलंकार का प्रयोग करते हुए वाल्मीकि कहते हैं कि उनके शब्द 'तीखे बाण' थे, जिनका उद्देश्य कैकेयी के पत्थर समान हृदय को भेदना और उसे कंपाना था। यह एक सेवक की अपने स्वामी के प्रति परम निष्ठा है।
