न हि मिथ्या प्रतिज्ञातम् करिष्यति तवानघः ।
श्रीमान्दशरथो राजा देवि राजीवलोचनः ॥ ॥२-३५-३१॥
Na hi mithyā pratijñātam kariṣyati tavānaghaḥ । Śrīmāndaśaratho rājā devi rājīvalocanaḥ ॥ ॥2-35-31॥
Translation
O Queen! The sinless, glorious King Dasharatha, with eyes like lotus petals, will never make his promise to you false.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे देवि! निष्पाप, श्रीमान और कमल नयन राजा दशरथ तुमसे की गई अपनी प्रतिज्ञा को कभी झूठा नहीं करेंगे।
English Commentary
Sumantra acknowledges the bind: Dasharatha will not break his word (na mithya karishyati). The onus of change lies entirely with Kaikeyi. By describing the King as Anagha (sinless) and Rajivalochana (lotus-eyed), Sumantra emphasizes his purity and nobility. He is telling Kaikeyi that she has already "won" on a technicality because the King is too honorable to refuse her. Therefore, she should show mercy, as enforcing the win destroys a righteous man.

सुमंत्र जानते हैं कि राजा दशरथ अपने सत्य के बंधन में बँधे हैं। वे स्वयं वनवास का आदेश वापस नहीं ले सकते। इसलिए सुमंत्र कैकेयी को याद दिलाते हैं कि राजा 'अनघ' (पापरहित) हैं और वे अपनी बात रखेंगे। इसका निहितार्थ यह है: "राजा तो वचन निभाएंगे ही, भले ही उनके प्राण चले जाएं, इसलिए यह तुम्हारी जिम्मेदारी है कि तुम उन्हें इस वचन से मुक्त कर दो।" राजा की सुंदरता (राजीवलोचन) और गरिमा का वर्णन करके वह कैकेयी के ह्रदय में पुराने प्रेम को जगाने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं।
