यथावयो हि राज्यानि प्राप्नुवन्ति नृपक्षये ।
इक्ष्वाकुकुलनाथेऽस्मिम्स्तल्लोपयितुमिच्छसि ॥ ॥२-३५-९॥
Yathāvayo hi rājyāni prāpnuvanti nṛpakṣaye । Ikṣvākukulanāthe'smimstallopayitumicchasi ॥ ॥2-35-9॥
Translation
"Indeed, upon the succession of kings, the sons obtain the kingdom according to age (primogeniture). Do you wish to abolish this tradition while the Lord of the Ikshvaku race is still alive?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"राजा के देहावसान (या निवृत्त होने) पर अवस्था (आयु) के अनुसार ही (पुत्र) राज्य पाते हैं। इक्ष्वाकु कुल के स्वामी (दशरथ) के रहते हुए तुम इस मर्यादा को लोप करना (मिटाना) चाहती हो?"
English Commentary
Moving from personal duty to constitutional law, Sumantra argues based on the tradition of primogeniture (yathāvayo). In the solar dynasty, the eldest always succeeds. He accuses Kaikeyi of attempting to subvert the established laws of succession established by their ancestors. This is not just unfair; it is illegal and revolutionary in a destructive sense. He frames her request as an attack on the very foundation of the Ikshvaku lineage.

सुमन्त्र अब 'कुल-परंपरा' का तर्क दे रहे हैं। इक्ष्वाकु वंश में 'ज्येष्ठानुक्रम' (बड़े पुत्र का राजा बनना) एक अटल नियम रहा है। कैकेयी न केवल राजा को कष्ट दे रही हैं, बल्कि उस प्राचीन संविधान को तोड़ रही हैं जिस पर राज्य टिका है। सुमन्त्र पूछते हैं कि क्या वह अराजकता फैलाना चाहती हैं? यह श्लोक बताता है कि राम का वनवास केवल एक पारिवारिक कलह नहीं, बल्कि राजधर्म और परंपरा पर एक प्रहार था।
