ततः सुमन्त्रम् ऐक्ष्वाकः पीडितः अत्र प्रतिज्ञया ।
सबाष्पम् अतिनिह्श्वस्य जगाद इदम् पुनः पुनः ॥ ॥२-३६-१॥
Tataḥ sumantram aikṣvākaḥ pīḍitaḥ atra pratijñayā । Sabāṣpam atiniḥśvasya jagāda idam punaḥ punaḥ ॥ ॥2-36-1॥
Translation
Then, the descendant of Ikshvaku (Dasharatha), tormented by his promise, sighing heavily with eyes full of tears, spoke this repeatedly to Sumantra.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनन्तर, अपनी प्रतिज्ञा से दुखी (पड़ित) इक्ष्वाकुवंशी राजा दशरथ ने आँखों में आँसू भरकर और लंबी आहें भरते हुए सुमंत्र से बार-बार यह कहा।
English Commentary
With Sumantra's failure, the narrative focus shifts back to the broken King. Dasharatha is described as pidita (tormented) by the very promise he must uphold. His heavy sighs and tears mark the transition from shock to damage control. He cannot stop the exile, but he attempts to mitigate its harshness. The repetition (punah punah) underscores his frantic state of mind—he is desperate to ensure Rama's safety and comfort, looking for loopholes in the cruel boon.

जब सुमंत्र हार गए, तो दशरथ ने स्थिति संभाली। यद्यपि वे 'प्रतिज्ञा से पीड़ित' हैं (वचन तोड़ नहीं सकते), फिर भी उनका पुत्र-प्रेम उन्हें एक नया रास्ता खोजने पर विवश करता है। राजा की शारीरिक स्थिति—आँसू और लंबी साँसें—उनकी आंतरिक टूट-फूट को दर्शाती हैं। 'पुनः पुनः' (बार-बार) शब्द उनकी व्याकुलता को दिखाता है। अब राजा एक ऐसा आदेश देने जा रहे हैं जो राम के वनवास को तकनीकी रूप से 'वनवास' रखते हुए भी उसे 'राज-प्रवास' में बदल दे।
