Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् उक्तः धिग् इति एव राजा दशरथो अब्रवीत् ।
व्रीडितः च जनः सर्वः सा च तन् न अवबुध्यत ॥ ॥२-३६-१७॥
Evam uktaḥ dhig iti eva rājā Daśaratho abravīt |
Vrīḍitaḥ ca janaḥ sarvaḥ sā ca tan na avabudhyata ॥2-36-17॥
Translation
Addressed thus, King Dasaratha could only say, "Shame!" All the people present were humiliated [on her behalf], yet she did not perceive it.
हिंदी अनुवाद
ऐसा कहने पर राजा दशरथ ने केवल "धिक्कार है!" (धिग्) कहा। वहाँ उपस्थित सभी लोग लज्जित हो गए, परन्तु वह (कैकेयी) इसे नहीं समझ पाई (उसे कोई लज्जा नहीं आई)।
English Commentary
Dasaratha is rendered speechless by the audacity of her comparison, uttering only the word "Dhig" (Fie/Shame). The collective reaction of the assembly is one of vicarious embarrassment; the courtiers feel ashamed to witness a queen behave so disgracefully. However, the tragedy is highlighted by the phrase "she did not perceive it." Kaikeyi is so blinded by her goal that she is immune to social pressure or moral condemnation. She mistakes the silence of the court for acceptance, or simply ceases to care about anything other than Bharata's inheritance.

कैकेयी के कुतर्क का उत्तर देने में राजा असमर्थ थे, उन्होंने केवल "धिक्कार" शब्द का प्रयोग किया। यह शब्द उनकी गहन पीड़ा और असहायता को व्यक्त करता है। दरबार में उपस्थित मंत्री और सेवक कैकेयी की निष्ठुरता देखकर लज्जित थे—उन्हें रानी के व्यवहार पर शर्म आ रही थी। लेकिन 'सा च तन्न अवबुध्यत' (वह इसे नहीं समझ पाई) पंक्ति सबसे महत्वपूर्ण है। कैकेयी मोह और स्वार्थ में इतनी अंधी हो चुकी थी कि उसे लोक-लज्जा या सामाजिक अपमान का कोई भान नहीं रहा। उसे अपनी जीत के आगे सब की शर्मिंदगी बेमानी लग रही थी।
