Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कथम् नु चीरम् बध्नन्ति मुनयो वन वासिनः ।
इति ह्यकुशला सीता सामुमोह मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ ॥२-३७-१२॥
Katham nu cīram badhnanti munayo vana vāsinaḥ |
Iti hyakuśalā Sītā sāmumoha muhurmuhuḥ ॥2-37-12॥
Translation
"How indeed do the forest-dwelling sages tie this bark garment?" Saying this, Sita, unskilled in such matters, became confused and bewildered again and again.
हिंदी अनुवाद
"वन में रहने वाले मुनि लोग इस चीर (वल्कल) को कैसे बांधते हैं?" ऐसा कहती हुई वह (इस कार्य में) अकुशल सीता बार-बार मोहित (उलझन में/व्याकुल) हो रही थीं।
English Commentary
This verse captures Sita’s pathetic struggle. She asks innocently, "How do sages tie this?" Being akushala (unskilled) in wearing bark, she fails repeatedly (muhurmuhuh) to secure the knot. It illustrates her complete unfamiliarity with hardship. The sight of a princess fumbling with rough bark while the court watches is a powerful image of her displacement. It evokes deep sympathy (Karuna Rasa) from the audience, highlighting the sheer injustice of forcing such a delicate soul into such a rugged existence.

यह दृश्य अत्यंत करुण है। जनकनंदिनी सीता वल्कल को कभी कमर पर लपेटती हैं, कभी कंधे पर, लेकिन वह टिकता नहीं है। वे 'अकुशला' (अनजान/अकुशल) हैं क्योंकि उन्होंने रेशम के अलावा कुछ पहना ही नहीं। 'मुहुर्मुहुः' (बार-बार) वे कोशिश करती हैं और असफल होती हैं। सभा में उपस्थित रानियां और प्रजाजन यह देखकर रो पड़ते हैं। यह दृश्य राजमहलों की कोमलता और वनवास की कठोरता के बीच के अंतर को स्पष्ट करता है। अंततः राम को ही उनकी सहायता के लिए आगे आना पड़ता है।
