कृत्वा कण्ठे च सा चीरम् एकम् आदाय पाणिना ।
तस्थौ हि अकुषला तत्र व्रीडिता जनक आत्मज ॥ ॥२-३७-१३॥
kṛtvā kaṇṭhe ca sā cīram ekam ādāya pāṇinā |
tasthau hi akuśalā tatra vrīḍitā janaka ātmaja ॥2-37-13॥
Translation
Being unskilled in the ways of ascetics, Janaka’s daughter (Sita) placed one end of the bark dress around her neck and held the other in her hand, standing there consumed by shame and confusion.

तपस्वी-वेश धारण करने में अकुशल जनकनंदनी सीता, वल्कल का एक छोर गले में डालकर तथा दूसरा हाथ में पकड़कर, लज्जित सी वहां खड़ी हो गईं।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the tragic contrast between Sita's royal upbringing and the harsh reality she is voluntarily accepting. The word akuśalā (unskilled) is poignant here; Sita, accustomed only to the finest silks, genuinely does not know how to wrap the rough bark around her body. Her posture—holding one piece awkwardly while draped in the other—signifies her innocence and vulnerability. यह श्लोक सीता जी की सरलता और उनकी राजसी पृष्ठभूमि के बीच के द्वंद्व को दर्शाता है। "अकुशल" शब्द यहाँ अत्यंत मार्मिक है; यह बताता है कि विदेहराज की पुत्री, जिन्होंने सदैव रेशमी वस्त्र ही पहने थे, उन्हें वल्कल (पेड़ की छाल) पहनने का तनिक भी ज्ञान नहीं था। वे संकोच और लज्जा से भर गईं क्योंकि वे नहीं जानती थीं कि इसे शरीर पर कैसे लपेटा जाए। उनकी यह विवशता वनवास की कठोरता का प्रथम अनुभव थी, जिसने वहां उपस्थित सभी के हृदय को द्रवित कर दिया।
