Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्याः तत् क्षिप्रम् आगम्य रामः धर्मभृताम् वरः ।
चीरम् बबन्ध सीतायाः कौशेयस्य उपरि स्वयम् ॥ ॥२-३७-१४॥
tasyāḥ tat kṣipram āgamya rāmaḥ dharmabhṛtām varaḥ |
cīram babandha sītāyāḥ kauśeyasya upari svayam ॥2-37-14॥
Translation
Then Rama, the foremost among the upholders of Dharma, quickly approached her and personally tied the bark fabric over Sita’s silk garment.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब धर्मधारियों में श्रेष्ठ श्री राम ने शीघ्रता से उनके पास जाकर, सीता जी के रेशमी वस्त्र (साड़ी) के ऊपर स्वयं वह वल्कल वस्त्र बाँध दिया।
English Commentary
This verse illustrates Rama’s immense compassion and presence of mind. Seeing Sita’s distress, he acts immediately to assist her, reinforcing his role as her protector even in humiliation. The juxtaposition of the rough bark (cīram) being tied over the fine silk (kauśeya) is symbolic: it represents the overlaying of ascetic duty upon their royal nature. Rama does not ask her to discard her silks but helps her adapt, showing that while he accepts the exile, he deeply respects her dignity.

यहाँ श्री राम का धैर्य और अपनी पत्नी के प्रति उनका प्रेम स्पष्ट होता है। सीता को लज्जित और उलझन में देख, राम क्षण भर भी नहीं रुके। "धर्मभृताम् वरः" (धर्म को धारण करने वालों में श्रेष्ठ) विशेषण यहाँ यह सूचित करता है कि पत्नी की मर्यादा की रक्षा करना और उसे कठिन समय में संबल देना भी पति का परम धर्म है। उन्होंने सीता को वस्त्र बदलने के लिए नहीं कहा, बल्कि रेशमी साड़ी के ऊपर ही वल्कल बाँध दिया, जो उनके त्याग और तत्काल निर्णय लेने की क्षमता को दर्शाता है।
