Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तासामेवम्विधा वाचः शृण्वन् दशरथात्मजः ।
बबन्धैव तदा चीरम् सीतया तुल्यशीलया ॥ ॥२-३७-२०॥
tāsāmevamvidhā vācaḥ śṛṇvan daśarathātmajaḥ |
babandhaiva tadā cīram sītayā tulyaśīlayā ॥2-37-20॥
Translation
Even while listening to such words of theirs, the son of Dasharatha continued to tie the bark dress on Sita, who was of a nature equal to his own.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन स्त्रियों की ऐसी बातें सुनते हुए भी दशरथनंदन राम ने, अपने समान ही शील (स्वभाव/विचार) वाली सीता को वल्कल वस्त्र बाँध ही दिया।
English Commentary
This verse signifies the unbreakable spiritual bond between the couple. Rama ignores the pleas not out of cruelty, but out of respect for Sita's agency. The phrase tulyaśīlayā (of equal character/nature) is crucial; it means Sita is not merely a follower but an equal partner in Dharma. Rama understands that denying her the bark dress would be denying her the right to fulfill her own duty. He values her resolve over the emotional outcry of the palace.

यह श्लोक राम और सीता के आत्मिक सम्बन्ध की गहराई को परिभाषित करता है। राम ने स्त्रियों की बातों अनसुना नहीं किया, किन्तु उन्होंने सीता के संकल्प को अधिक महत्व दिया। "तुल्यशीलया" (समान शील वाली) शब्द यहाँ कुंजी है—राम जानते थे कि सीता का धर्म भी वही है जो राम का है। यदि राम सीता को रोकते, तो यह सीता के पतिव्रता धर्म का अपमान होता। इसलिए, लोक-निंदा या दुःख की परवाह न करते हुए, उन्होंने सीता की इच्छा का सम्मान किया।
