न गन्तव्यम् वनम् देव्या सीतया शीलवर्जिते ।
अनुष्ठास्यति रामस्य सीता प्रकृतमासनम् ॥ ॥२-३७-२३॥
na gantavyam vanam devyā sītayā śīlavarjite |
anuṣṭhāsyati rāmasya sītā prakṛtamāsanam ॥2-37-23॥
Translation
"The noble Sita shall not go to the forest, O woman void of character! Sita will occupy the throne that was intended for Rama."

"हे शीलरहित (कैकेयी)! देवी सीता को वन नहीं जाना है। यह सीता राम के उस आसन (सिंहासन) पर बैठेगी जो उन्हें मिलने वाला था।"
English Commentary
Vasistha counters Kaikeyi with legal and dharmic logic. Addressing her as śīlavarjite (one devoid of good conduct), he declares that Sita acts as Rama's proxy. If the King (Rama) is absent, the Queen takes the throne. This statement is a direct blow to Kaikeyi's ambition; she wanted the kingdom for Bharata, but Vasistha argues that by rights, it now falls to Sita. It reinforces Sita’s high status—she is not a mere follower but a sovereign entity in Rama’s absence.

वसिष्ठ जी यहाँ धर्मशास्त्र का एक सशक्त तर्क प्रस्तुत करते हैं। वे घोषणा करते हैं कि यदि राम वन जाते हैं, तो उनका अधिकार समाप्त नहीं होता, बल्कि उनकी पत्नी को हस्तांतरित होता है। "शीलवर्जिते" कहकर वे पुनः कैकेयी का अपमान करते हैं। गुरु का निर्णय है कि सीता वन नहीं जाएँगी, बल्कि अयोध्या पर शासन करेंगी। यह कैकेयी की योजना पर पानी फेरने जैसा था, क्योंकि वह भरत के लिए राज्य चाहती थी, न कि सीता के शासन के लिए।
