ततः शून्याम् गतजनाम् वसुधाम् पादपैः सह ।
त्वमेका शाधि दुर्वृत्ता प्रजानामहिते स्थिता ॥ ॥२-३७-२८॥
tatah śūnyām gatajanām vasudhām pādapaiḥ saha |
tvamekā śādhi durvṛttā prajānāmahite sthitā ॥2-37-28॥
Translation
"Then, O woman of wicked conduct intent on harming the people, rule all by yourself over this empty earth, deserted by its people and containing only trees."

English Commentary
This represents the ultimate condemnation of tyranny. Vasistha mocks Kaikeyi’s ambition by granting her the wish in a twisted way: she will be Queen, but only over trees (pādapaiḥ saha) and empty land. Addressing her as durvṛttā (vile/wicked), he highlights that a ruler who acts against the welfare of the subjects (prajānām ahite) eventually rules over a graveyard or a wasteland.

वसिष्ठ का क्रोध यहाँ चरम पर है। वे कैकेयी को "दुर्वृत्ता" (बुरे चरित्र वाली) कहते हैं। उनका श्राप जैसा कथन है कि 'तुम पेड़ों पर राज करना'। राजा का अस्तित्व प्रजा से है; प्रजाविहीन राजा केवल भूमि के टुकड़े का मालिक होता है, शासक नहीं। यह श्लोक सत्ता के अहंकार पर एक करारी चोट है—बिना जनसमर्थन के सिंहासन केवल लकड़ी का ढाँचा है।
