Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न हि तद्भविता राष्ट्रम् यत्र रामो न भूपतिः ।
तद्वनम् भविता राष्ट्रम् यत्र रामो निवत्स्यति ॥ ॥२-३७-२९॥
na hi tadbhavitā rāṣṭram yatra rāmo na bhūpatiḥ |
tadvanam bhavitā rāṣṭram yatra rāmo nivatsyati ॥2-37-29॥
Translation
"That will indeed not be a kingdom where Rama is not the King. That forest where Rama dwells is destined to become the kingdom."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"वह राज्य, राज्य ही नहीं होगा जहाँ राम राजा नहीं हैं। (इसके विपरीत) जहाँ राम निवास करेंगे, वह वन ही राष्ट्र बन जाएगा।"
English Commentary
This is a seminal verse defining the concept of legitimacy and sovereignty. Vasistha declares that the "State" is not a physical location but an embodiment of Dharma represented by the King. Without Rama, Ayodhya is a nullity. Conversely, Rama carries the essence of the Kingdom with him; the wilderness will transform into a metropolis of culture and power simply by his presence.

यह वाल्मीकि रामायण के सबसे प्रसिद्ध और प्रभावशाली श्लोकों में से एक है। वसिष्ठ जी "राष्ट्र" की परिभाषा ही बदल देते हैं। राष्ट्र भूगोल (जमीन) से नहीं, बल्कि नेतृत्व (चरित्र) से बनता है। राम का व्यक्तित्व इतना विराट है कि वे जहाँ खड़े होंगे, सत्ता का केंद्र वहीं होगा। अयोध्या अपना महत्व खो देगी और दंडकारण्य वन भारतवर्ष की राजधानी बन जाएगा।
