न ह्यदत्ताम् महीम् पित्रा भरतः शास्तुमर्हति ।
त्वयि वा पुत्रवद्वस्तुम् यदि जातो महीपतेः ॥ ॥२-३७-३०॥
na hyadattām mahīm pitrā bharataḥ śāstumarhati |
tvayi vā putravadvastum yadi jāto mahīpateḥ ॥2-37-30॥
Translation
"Bharata will not consent to rule over a kingdom not formally given by his father. Nor, if he is truly born of the King, will he live with you as a son."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"पिता द्वारा विधिवत न दी गई इस पृथ्वी पर भरत शासन करना स्वीकार नहीं करेंगे। और यदि वह वास्तव में महाराज (दशरथ) से उत्पन्न हुए हैं, तो वह तुम्हारे साथ पुत्र-भाव से रहेंगे भी नहीं।"
English Commentary
Vasistha questions the legitimacy of the transfer of power. In Vedic tradition, a kingdom is a gift from the predecessor, not a spoil of blackmail. He asserts that Bharata, possessing the noble blood of Dasharatha, will recognize this illegitimacy. Furthermore, he predicts a rupture in the mother-son relationship, stating that a righteous son cannot abide by a mother who has destroyed his father's house.

यहाँ वसिष्ठ जी 'उत्तराधिकार' और 'संस्कार' की बात कर रहे हैं। क्षत्रिय धर्म के अनुसार, पिता द्वारा प्रसन्नता पूर्वक दिया गया राज्य ही स्वीकार्य है, छल से छीना गया नहीं। वे यह भी कहते हैं कि यदि भरत में दशरथ का खून है, तो वे कैकेयी जैसी अधर्मी माँ के साथ संबंध विच्छेद कर लेंगे। यह भविष्य में होने वाले भरत के व्यवहार की सटीक भविष्यवाणी है।
