यो हि दत्त्वा द्विप श्रेष्ठम् कक्ष्यायाम् कुरुते मनः ।
रज्जु स्नेहेन किम् तस्य त्यजतः कुन्जर उत्तमम् ॥ ॥२-३७-३॥
Yo hi dattvā dvipa śreṣṭham kakṣyāyām kurute manaḥ |
Rajju snehena kim tasya tyajataḥ kunjara uttamam ॥2-37-3॥
Translation
"He who gives away an excellent elephant but sets his mind on the rope (that binds it)—of what use is his attachment to the rope when he has already abandoned the elephant itself?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"जो श्रेष्ठ हाथी का दान करके उसकी रस्सी (या जंजीर) में मन अटका ले, उस उत्तम हाथी को छोड़ने वाले व्यक्ति का उस रस्सी के प्रति मोह रखना व्यर्थ है।"
English Commentary
Rama uses a striking metaphor to settle the dispute regarding the army and treasury. The kingdom is compared to a majestic elephant, and the accessories (wealth/army) are merely the rope used to bind it. He argues: "I have already surrendered the kingdom (the elephant) to Bharata. Why should I haggle over the rope?" It implies that retaining the army without the kingdom is absurd. This shows Rama’s clarity of thought; once he decides to renounce, he does so partially but totally.

राम यहाँ एक अद्भुत लौकिक दृष्टांत (Analogy) देते हैं। 'राज्य' हाथी के समान विशाल और मूल्यवान है, और 'सेना/धन' उस हाथी को बांधने वाली रस्सी के समान तुच्छ हैं। राम कहते हैं कि जब मैंने राज्य ही भरत को दे दिया (हाथी दान कर दिया), तो मैं सेना (रस्सी) का मोह क्यों रखूं? छोटी वस्तुओं के लिए विवाद करना उदारता नहीं, कृपणता है। राम पिता को समझा रहे हैं कि जब बड़ा त्याग कर दिया, तो छोटे त्याग में संकोच कैसा? यह उनकी महानता और अनासक्ति को दर्शाता है।
