अथोत्तमान्याभरणानि देवि ।
देहि स्नुषायै व्यपनीय चीरम् ।
न चीरमस्याः प्रविधीयतेति ।
न्यवारयत् तद्वसनम् वसिष्ठः ॥ ॥२-३७-३४॥
athottamānyābharaṇāni devi |
dehi snuṣāyai vyapanīya cīram |
na cīramasyāḥ pravidhīyateti |
nyavārayat tadvasanam vasiṣṭhaḥ ॥2-37-34॥
Translation
(Having reprimanded her), Vasistha prevented that bark dress (for Sita) and said: "O Queen, remove the bark and give excellent ornaments to your daughter-in-law. Bark dress is not ordained for her."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(फटकारने के बाद) वसिष्ठ जी ने उस वल्कल वस्त्र को रोक दिया और कहा—"हे देवि (कटाक्ष में)! अपनी पुत्रवधू (सीता) का वल्कल उतारकर उसे उत्तम आभूषण दो। इसके लिए वल्कल का विधान नहीं है।"
English Commentary
Vasistha shifts from predicting the future to exercising his authority as the Royal Preceptor. He legally interprets the boon: the austere life is mandated for the exile (Rama), not for his voluntary companion. He commands Kaikeyi to provide uttama ābharaṇāni (excellent jewels) instead of rags. This intervention saves Sita from the humiliation of wearing bark and asserts the boundaries of Kaikeyi's power.

यहाँ वसिष्ठ जी अपनी अधिकार शक्ति (Veto power) का प्रयोग करते हैं। उन्होंने सीता के वल्कल पहनने पर रोक ("न्यवारयत्") लगा दी। वे स्पष्ट करते हैं कि कैकेयी का वरदान केवल राम के लिए था; सीता पर उसे लागू करना अधर्म है। उन्होंने आदेश दिया कि सीता राजसी आभूषण पहनकर ही जाएँगी। यह गुरु द्वारा सीता की गरिमा की रक्षा का एक सशक्त क्षण है।
