खनित्र पिटके च उभे मम आनयत गच्चतः ।
चतुर् दश वने वासम् वर्षाणि वसतः मम ॥ ॥२-३७-५॥
Khanitra piṭake ca ubhe mama ānayata gaccataḥ |
Catur daśa vane vāsam varṣāṇi vasataḥ mama ॥2-37-5॥
Translation
"Bring me a shovel and a basket as I depart to dwell in the forest for fourteen years."

"वन में जाते हुए और वहां चौदह वर्ष निवास करते हुए मेरे लिए (कंद-मूल खोदने हेतु) कुदाल और टोकरी—ये दोनों ला दीजिये।"
English Commentary
In a heartbreaking echo of the Asamanja story cited by Siddhartha earlier, Rama explicitly asks for a khanitra (digging tool) and pitaka (basket). While Asamanja was forced to carry these as a punishment for crimes, Rama voluntarily requests them as tools for his righteous penance. It signifies his readiness to labor for his own food (roots and tubers) and his refusal to be a burden on anyone. He is mentally prepared for the hard labor of the next fourteen years.

पिछले श्लोकों में मंत्री सिद्धार्थ ने बताया था कि कैसे दुष्ट असमंज को 'फालपिटकम्' (कुदाल-टोकरी) लेकर जाना पड़ा था। अब राम स्वयं वही वस्तुएं मांग रहे हैं। यह विडंबना (Irony) अत्यंत दुखद है। असमंज को दंड स्वरूप ये मिली थीं, राम धर्म पालन हेतु इन्हें मांग रहे हैं। वे आत्मनिर्भरता का संदेश दे रहे हैं—वे वन में किसी की सेवा नहीं लेंगे, बल्कि स्वयं खोदकर भोजन प्राप्त करेंगे। यह उनकी तपस्या की तैयारी है। चौदह वर्ष का स्पष्ट उल्लेख करके वे कैकेयी को आश्वस्त कर रहे हैं कि वे अवधि पूरी करेंगे।
