Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तत्त्वेतत्समतिक्रम्य निरयम् गन्तुमिच्छसि ।
मैथिलीमपि या हि त्व मीक्षसे चीरवासिनीम् ॥ ॥२-३८-१२॥
Tattvetatsamatikramya nirayam gantumicchasi |
Maithilīmapi yā hi tvāmīkṣase cīravāsinīm ॥2-38-12॥
Translation
(Dasharatha says to Kaikeyi) By transgressing all limits of propriety, you surely wish to go to hell, since you are forcing even Maithili (Sita) to wear bark garments and watching it happen.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(दशरथ कैकेयी से कहते हैं) तू इन सब मर्यादाओं का उल्लंघन करके नरक में ही जाना चाहती है, जो तू सीता (मैथिली) को भी चीर-वस्त्र (तपस्वी के वस्त्र) पहने हुए देख रही है।
English Commentary
King Dasharatha reaches a breaking point in witnessing the humiliation of his family. While he was bound by truth to banish Rama, forcing Sita—the delicate Princess of Mithila—to wear rough bark robes (cheera) strikes him as a violation of all Dharma. He condemns Kaikeyi, suggesting that her actions have moved beyond mere political maneuvering into the realm of sin that leads to hell. The commentary highlights the distinction between political duty and moral outrage. Sita was not bound by the boons, yet she chose to follow her husband. For Kaikeyi to not only allow but insist on Sita wearing ascetic garb is seen by Dasharatha as an act of unnecessary cruelty. It emphasizes the King’s protective instinct towards his daughter-in-law and his horror at the degradation of royal dignity.

यहाँ राजा दशरथ का क्रोध और वेदना चरम सीमा पर है। कैकेयी द्वारा सीता को भी वनवासी के वल्कल वस्त्र (पेड़ की छाल) पहनने के लिए बाध्य करना दशरथ के लिए असहनीय है। सीता एक सुकोमल राजकुमारी हैं, जिनका वनवास से कोई सीधा सम्बन्ध नहीं था, फिर भी पतिव्रता होने के कारण वे राम के साथ जा रही हैं। दशरथ कैकेयी को चेतावनी देते हैं कि राम का वनवास माँगना एक बात थी, लेकिन सीता जैसी साध्वी को तपस्वी वेश में देखना घोर पाप है। राजा का मानना है कि कैकेयी ने मानवता और धर्म की सारी सीमाएं लांघ दी हैं, जिसका परिणाम केवल नरक हो सकता है। यह श्लोक दर्शाता है कि अन्याय होते देख चुप रहना या उसे बढ़ावा देना, कर्ता को नैतिक पतन की ओर ले जाता है। दशरथ की असहायता और कैकेयी की निष्ठुरता का यह एक मार्मिक चित्रण है।
