Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् ब्रुवन्तम् पितरम् रामः सम्प्रस्थितः वनम् ।
अवाक् शिरसम् आसीनम् इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥२-३८-१४॥
Evam bruvantam pitaram Rāmaḥ samprasthitaḥ vanam |
Avāk śirasam āsīnam idam vacanam abravīt ॥2-38-14॥
Translation
To his father, who was speaking thus (lamenting) and sitting with his head hanging low, Rama, ready to depart for the forest, spoke these words.

इस प्रकार विलाप करते हुए और सिर नीचा किए हुए बैठे पिता से, वन के लिए प्रस्थान करने को तैयार राम ने यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This verse captures the dramatic contrast between the father and the son. Dasharatha is depicted with his head down ("avak shirasam"), a posture of shame, defeat, and immense sorrow. He is paralyzed by the situation. In contrast, Rama is described as "samprasthitaḥ" (ready to depart/set out). Rama does not display anger or hesitation. Instead, seeing his father in such a vulnerable state, he takes the initiative to speak. The commentary notes that usually, a father guides the son, but here, the son must stabilize the father. Rama’s readiness to leave shows his acceptance of Dharma, while his decision to speak to his despondent father highlights his compassion. He knows he must address the King one last time to ensure the welfare of those he leaves behind.

यहाँ एक अद्भुत विरोधाभास है। एक ओर पिता दशरथ हैं जो मोह और शोक में डूबकर सिर झुकाए बैठे हैं, और दूसरी ओर पुत्र राम हैं जो वन जाने के लिए पूर्णतः तत्पर (सम्प्रस्थितः) हैं। राम का व्यक्तित्व यहाँ स्थितप्रज्ञ जैसा है; वे विचलित नहीं हैं, बल्कि जाने से पहले अपने कर्तव्यों को पूरा करना चाहते हैं। दशरथ का 'अवाक् शिरसम्' (नीचे सिर किए हुए) होना उनकी लज्जा और ग्लानि को दर्शाता है। वे अपनी ही रानी के वचनों से बंधे होने के कारण पुत्र से आँख मिलाने में असमर्थ हैं। ऐसे वातावरण में राम का बोलना उनके संयम और परिपक्वता का परिचायक है। वे अपने पिता की पीड़ा को समझते हैं, इसलिए वे अपनी नहीं, बल्कि पीछे रह जाने वाले अपने प्रियजनों की चिंता करते हैं।
