इमाम् महा इन्द्र उपम जात गर्भिनीम् ।
तथा विधातुम् जनमीम् मम अर्हसि ।
यथा वनस्थे मयि शोक कर्शिता ।
न जीवितम् न्यस्य यम क्षयम् व्रजेत् ॥ ॥२-३८-१८॥
Imām mahā indra upama jāta garbhinīm |
Tathā vidhātum jananīm mama arhasi |
Yathā vanasthe mayi śoka karśitā |
Na jīvitam nyasya yama kṣayam vrajet ॥2-38-18॥
Translation
O father, equal to great Indra! You ought to treat my mother in such a way that she, emaciated by grief while I am in the forest, does not give up her life and depart to the abode of Yama (Death).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे महेंद्र के समान तेजस्वी पिता! आप मेरी जननी के साथ ऐसा व्यवहार करें जिससे मेरे वन में रहने पर, शोक से दुर्बल हुई यह (मेरी माता) अपने प्राण त्याग कर यमराज के घर न चली जाए।
English Commentary
In this concluding verse of the sarga, Rama’s anxiety for his mother's life is palpable. Addressing Dasharatha as equal to Indra implies that the King has the power to protect and sustain life. Rama frankly expresses his fear: that Kausalya, withered by grief (shoka karshita), might die (Yama kshayam vrajet). The commentary emphasizes the gravity of Rama's request. He is not asking for luxuries for her; he is asking for her very survival. He places the burden of keeping her alive squarely on Dasharatha's conduct. It is a heart-rending plea that showcases Rama's selflessness—even at the moment of his own exile, his primary concern is preventing the tragedy of his mother’s death due to a broken heart.

यह 38वें सर्ग का अंतिम और अत्यंत भावुक श्लोक है। राम अपने पिता की तुलना 'महेन्द्र' (देवराज इन्द्र) से करते हैं, जो शक्ति और संरक्षण के प्रतीक हैं। राम की सबसे बड़ी आशंका यह है कि उनके वियोग में कौसल्या मर सकती हैं ("यम क्षयम् व्रजेत्"). राम स्पष्ट रूप से कहते हैं कि "मैं तो वन में रहूँगा," पर पीछे महलों में माँ शोक से "कर्शिता" (कमज़ोर/सूख जाना) हो जाएंगी। उस समय केवल दशरथ का व्यवहार ही उन्हें मृत्यु के मुख में जाने से रोक सकता है। राम यहाँ अपने वनवास के कष्ट की चिंता नहीं कर रहे, बल्कि इस बात से भयभीत हैं कि उनकी अनुपस्थिति उनकी माँ के लिए जानलेवा न बन जाए। यह एक पुत्र की अंतिम करुण विनती है।
