रामस्य तु वचः श्रुत्वा मुनि वेष धरम् च तम् ।
समीक्ष्य सह भार्याभी राजा विगत चेतनः ॥ ॥२-३९-१॥
Rāmasya tu vacaḥ śrutvā muni veṣa dharam ca tam |
Samīkṣya saha bhāryābhī rājā vigata cetanaḥ ॥2-39-1॥
Translation
Hearing the words of Rama and seeing him dressed in the guise of a sage along with his wife (Sita), the King lost his consciousness.

राम के (माता के विषय में कहे गए) वचनों को सुनकर और पत्नी (सीता) सहित उन्हें मुनि के वेश में देखकर, राजा दशरथ अचेत (मूर्छित) हो गए।
English Commentary
This verse marks the beginning of Sarga 39. The immediate trigger for Dasharatha's fainting is twofold: auditory and visual. Hearing Rama’s selfless plea for Kausalya reminds the King of the immense loss he is causing, and seeing the royal couple in "Muni vesha" (sage's attire) is the visual confirmation of his nightmare. The commentary notes that the reality of the situation has finally hit Dasharatha with full force. The contrast between what was planned (coronation) and what is happening (exile in rags) causes a psychological shut-down ("vigata cetanah"). It signifies the complete breakdown of the King’s faculties under the weight of grief and guilt.

39वां सर्ग राजा की मूर्छा और विलाप से शुरू होता है। दो बातें राजा के हृदय को चीर देती हैं: पहला, राम का अपनी माँ के जीवन की रक्षा के लिए की गई विनती, और दूसरा, प्रत्यक्ष दृश्य जहाँ राजकुमार राम और राजकुमारी सीता तपस्वी के कपड़े पहने खड़े हैं। "विगत चेतनः" (चेतना का चला जाना) यह दर्शाता है कि राजा का मस्तिष्क इस दृश्य को स्वीकार करने में असमर्थ हो गया। जिन नेत्रों ने राम को राज्याभिषेक के लिए तैयार देखने का स्वप्न देखा था, वे उन्हें भिखारी के वेश में नहीं देख सके। यह स्थिति दर्शाती है कि सत्य और वचन का पालन कितना क्रूर हो सकता है। दशरथ का शरीर अब इस मानसिक आघात को सहन नहीं कर पा रहा है।
