तेन तत्र प्रणादेन दुःखितस्स महीपतिः ।
चिच्छेद जीविते श्रद्धाम् धर्मे यशसि चात्मनः ॥ ॥२-३८-२॥
tena tatra praṇādena duḥkhitassa mahīpatiḥ |
ciccheda jīvite śraddhām dharme yaśasi cātmanaḥ ॥2-38-2॥
Translation
Distressed by that loud outcry there, the Lord of the Earth (Dasharatha) lost all interest in his life, his dharma, and his own fame.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस (जनता के) कोलाहल और धिक्कार को सुनकर राजा दशरथ अत्यंत दुखी हुए। उन्होंने अपने जीवन, धर्म और यश से आस्था (उम्मीद) ही तोड़ दी।
English Commentary
The psychological impact of the public's condemnation on Dasharatha is devastating. A King lives for Dharma and Yasha (fame/reputation). Hearing his subjects curse him destroys the very foundation of his existence. He realizes that in trying to keep his word (Satya) to Kaikeyi, he has lost everything else. This moment marks the spiritual death of the King; he gives up hope (śraddhām), essentially entering a state of total despondency before his physical end.
हिंदी टीका
प्रजा की धिक्कार ने दशरथ की आत्मा को भेद दिया। राजा के लिए प्रजा का सम्मान ही उसका जीवन होता है। जब उन्होंने देखा कि वे अपनी ही पुत्रवधू की रक्षा नहीं कर सके और प्रजा उन्हें अपराधी मान रही है, तो वे अंदर से मर गए। "चिच्छेद" (काट दिया/तोड़ दिया) शब्द बताता है कि अब उन्हें जीने की, धर्म पालन की या कीर्ति की कोई इच्छा नहीं रही। यह उनके आसन्न मृत्यु का मानसिक पूर्वाभास है।
