न एनम् दुह्खेन सम्तप्तः प्रत्यवैक्षत राघवम् ।
न च एनम् अभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य प्रत्यभाषत दुर्मनाः ॥ ॥२-३९-२॥
Na enam duhkhena samtaptaḥ pratyavaikṣata Rāghavam |
Na ca enam abhisamprekṣya pratyabhāṣata durmanāḥ ॥2-39-2॥
Translation
Burning with grief, he could not look at Raghava (Rama), nor, having looked at him, could the miserable-minded King speak to him.
हिंदी अनुवाद
दुःख से जलते हुए राजा न तो राघव (राम) की ओर देख पा रहे थे, और न ही उन्हें देखकर कुछ बोल पा रहे थे। वे अत्यंत उदास (दुर्मनाः) थे।
English Commentary
This verse describes a paralysis born of shame and agony. Dasharatha acts as if he is physically burning with grief. He avoids making eye contact with Rama because looking at him confirms the tragedy he himself authorized (albeit under duress). The commentary points out the rupture in communication. The King is rendered mute and blind by his misery. He cannot face the consequences of his truthfulness. It is a powerful depiction of a man crushed by his own integrity, unable to offer words of comfort or farewell because he feels entirely responsible for the suffering of his beloved son.

अपराधबोध (Guilt) और शोक का मिश्रित रूप यहाँ दिखाई देता है। दशरथ राम की ओर आँख उठाकर देखने की हिम्मत नहीं जुटा पा रहे हैं। जिस पुत्र को उन्होंने वनवास दिया है, उसे वल्कल वस्त्रों में देखना उनकी आत्मा को जला रहा है ("दुःखेन सम्तप्तः"). यदि वे देखते भी हैं, तो कंठ अवरुद्ध हो जाता है; वे कुछ बोल नहीं पाते। "दुर्मनाः" (व्याकुल चित्त) शब्द राजा की मानसिक अस्थिरता को बताता है। संवाद पूरी तरह से टूट चुका है क्योंकि राजा की अंतरात्मा उन्हें कचोट रही है। यह श्लोक मूक वेदना का चित्रण है—जहाँ शब्द और दृष्टि दोनों साथ छोड़ देते हैं।
