राज्ञो वचनमाज्ञाय सुमन्त्रः शीघ्रविक्रमः ।
योजयित्वा ययौ तत्र रथमश्वैरलंकृतम् ॥२-३-nine 12॥ ॥२-३९-१२॥
rājño vacanamājñāya sumantraḥ śīghravikramaḥ |
yojayitvā yayau tatra rathamaśvairalaṃkṛtam ॥2-39-12॥
Translation
Understanding the King's command, Sumantra, who was swift in action, yoked the horses to the adorned chariot and arrived there.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राजा की आज्ञा को समझकर, शीघ्र पराक्रम (कार्य) करने वाले सुमन्त्र ने घोड़ों से जुते हुए और अलंकृत रथ को तैयार किया और वहाँ आ गए।
English Commentary
Sumantra displays his efficiency and loyalty, described here as śīghra-vikramaḥ (one of swift prowess/action). He wastes no time, understanding that lingering prolongs the agony of the departure. Notably, he brings a chariot that is alaṃkṛtam (adorned/decorated). Despite the somber occasion of exile, the charioteer upholds protocol and his own deep respect for Rama by presenting a vehicle fit for a prince, not a prisoner. This action subtly resists the degradation intended by Kaikeyi’s demands.

सुमन्त्र का विशेषण यहाँ 'शीघ्रविक्रमः' (तेजी से कार्य करने वाला) है। एक मंत्री के रूप में, वह राजा की मनोदशा और स्थिति की गंभीरता को समझते हैं। विलंब करने से राजा का दुख और बढ़ेगा और स्थिति अधिक तनावपूर्ण होगी, इसलिए वे तुरंत आदेश का पालन करते हैं। वे एक 'अलंकृत' (सजा हुआ) रथ लाते हैं, जो यह दर्शाता है कि सुमन्त्र अभी भी राम को युवराज के रूप में ही देखते हैं और उन्हें वनवासी मानकर साधारण रथ नहीं लाए। यह सेवक की स्वामिभक्ति और मर्यादा पालन का उदाहरण है।
