न कुलं न कृतं विद्या न दत्तं नापि संग्रहः ।
स्त्रीणां गृह्णाति हृदयमनित्यहृदया हि ताः ॥२-३९-२३॥
na kulaṃ na kṛtaṃ vidyā na dattaṃ nāpi saṃgrahaḥ |
strīṇāṃ gṛhṇāti hṛdayamanityahṛdayā hi tāḥ ॥2-39-23॥
Translation
Neither lineage, nor past deeds, nor knowledge, nor gifts, nor accumulation (of wealth) can capture the hearts of such women, for they are indeed of unstable hearts.

ऐसी (कुलटा) स्त्रियों के हृदय को न तो उत्तम कुल, न उपकार, न विद्या, न दिया हुआ दान और न ही संचय वश में कर सकता है, क्योंकि उनका हृदय अस्थिर होता है।
English Commentary
Kausalya enumerates the factors that typically bind people together—lineage (kulam), favors (kṛtam), education (vidyā), or gifts (dattam)—and asserts that none of these suffice to hold a fickle heart (anitya-hṛdayā). This is a cynical but pragmatic view of worldly relationships born from her experience. She warns that if the internal moral compass is lacking, no external merit of the husband can prevent abandonment. The implication is that Sita’s loyalty must stem from her own character, not from Rama’s ability to provide, as he is now destitute.

कौशल्या कहती हैं कि बाहरी कारक—जैसे ऊँचा खानदान ('कुलं'), ज्ञान ('विद्या'), या धन-दौलत ('संग्रहः')—उन लोगों को बांध कर नहीं रख सकते जिनका स्वभाव ही 'अनित्य' (अस्थिर) है। यदि निष्ठा भीतर से नहीं है, तो कोई भी सामाजिक बंधन या उपहार उसे टिका नहीं सकता। यह श्लोक मानवीय संबंधों की भंगुरता पर एक दार्शनिक टिप्पणी है। कौशल्या सीता को समझा रही हैं कि पति-पत्नी का संबंध इन बाहरी वस्तुओं पर नहीं, बल्कि आंतरिक धर्म और समर्पण पर आधारित होना चाहिए, क्योंकि वन में राम के पास देने के लिए 'दत्तं' या 'संग्रहः' कुछ नहीं होगा।
