सीताया वचनं श्रुत्वा कौसल्या हृदयंगमम् ।
शुद्धसत्त्वा मुमोचाश्रु सहसा दुःखहर्षजम् ॥२-३९-३२॥
sītāyā vacanaṃ śrutvā kausalyā hṛdayaṃgamam |
śuddhasattvā mumocāśru sahasā duḥkhaharṣajam ॥2-39-32॥
Translation
Hearing Sita's heart-touching words, the pure-hearted Kausalya suddenly shed tears born of both grief and joy.

सीता के हृदय को स्पर्श करने वाले वचनों को सुनकर, शुद्ध अंतःकरण वाली कौशल्या ने सहसा दुःख और हर्ष दोनों से उत्पन्न आंसू बहाए।
English Commentary
This verse captures a complex psychological state: duḥkha-harṣa-jam (born of sorrow and joy). Kausalya weeps from joy because she is relieved and proud to see Sita’s unshakeable resolve and wisdom; she knows Rama will not be emotionally alone. However, she weeps from sorrow because the reality of their departure is painful, and the thought of such a noble princess living in the wild is heartbreaking. The term hṛdayaṃgamam (going to the heart) indicates that Sita’s words deeply resonated with Kausalya, bridging the gap between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.

यहाँ कौशल्या की मिश्रित भावनाओं का सुंदर चित्रण है—'दुःखहर्षजम्' (दुःख और हर्ष से उत्पन्न)। हर्ष इसलिए है कि उन्हें ऐसी विदुषी और पतिव्रता पुत्रवधू मिली है जो वन में राम की ढाल बनेगी। दुःख इसलिए है कि ऐसी सुकुमार और सद्गुणी बहू को वन के कष्ट सहने पड़ेंगे। 'शुद्धसत्त्वा' (पवित्र मन वाली) विशेषण बताता है कि कौशल्या का हृदय कपट रहित है; वे सीता के वचनों की सच्चाई को तुरंत पहचान लेती हैं। यह विदाई का एक अत्यंत भावुक क्षण है जहाँ एक माँ का डर गर्व में बदल जाता है, फिर भी विरह की पीड़ा बनी रहती है।
