एतावदभिनीतार्थमुक्त्वा स जननीं वचः ।
त्रयःशतशतार्धा हि ददर्शावेक्ष्य मातरः ॥२-३९-३६॥
etāvadabhinītārthamuktvā sa jananīṃ vacaḥ |
trayaḥśataśatārdhā hi dadarśāvekṣya mātaraḥ ॥2-39-36॥
Translation
Having spoken these appropriate and meaningful words to his birth mother, he looked around and beheld his three hundred and fifty mothers (stepmothers).

अपनी जननी (कौशल्या) से इतना उचित और सारगर्भित वचन कहकर, राम ने दृष्टि डालकर उन साढ़े तीन सौ (३५०) माताओं (विमात्रों) को देखा।
English Commentary
After consoling his biological mother, Rama turns his attention to the wider royal household. The text specifies trayaḥ śata śata ardhā (three hundred and fifty) mothers, referring to the other wives of Dasharatha. Rama does not ignore them in his grief. The phrase abhinīta-artham suggests his speech to Kausalya was well-composed and purposeful. Now, he acknowledges the collective presence of his stepmothers, preparing to address them with the same filial piety he showed Kausalya.

कौशल्या से विदा लेने के बाद, राम अपनी अन्य माताओं (दशरथ की अन्य पत्नियों) की ओर मुड़ते हैं। यहाँ संख्या 'त्रयः शत शत अर्धा' (३५०) दी गई है। यह दर्शाता है कि दशरथ का अंतःपुर विशाल था, किन्तु राम उन सभी को 'मातरः' (माताएं) मानते हैं। 'अभिनीतार्थम्' का अर्थ है, जो स्थिति के अनुरूप उचित और गंभीर हो। राम का व्यवहार सौतेला नहीं है; वे सभी रानियों का सम्मान करते हैं और उनसे विदा लेना अपना धर्म समझते हैं।
