ताश्चापि स तथैवार्ता मातृर्दशरथात्मजः ।
धर्मयुक्तमिदं वाक्यं निजगाद कृताञ्जलिः ॥२-३९-३७॥
tāścāpi sa tathaivārtā mātṛrdaśarathātmajaḥ |
dharmayuktamidaṃ vākyaṃ nijagāda kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥2-39-37॥
Translation
Dasharatha's son (Rama), with joined hands, spoke these righteous words to those mothers who were also equally distressed.

दशरथनंदन (राम) ने उन दुखी माताओं से भी, हाथ जोड़कर, धर्म से युक्त यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
The stepmothers are described as ārtā (distressed) just like Kausalya, indicating Rama was universally loved in the harem. Rama addresses them with kṛtāñjaliḥ (folded hands), maintaining his humble demeanor. The narrator emphasizes that his words were dharma-yuktam (accordant with righteousness). Even in this moment of injustice caused by one of his stepmothers (Kaikeyi), Rama extends respect to the entire group, treating them collectively as his mothers without distinction.

वे माताएं भी 'तथैवार्ता' (वैसे ही दुखी) थीं जैसे कौशल्या। राम के प्रति उनका प्रेम सगी माँ से कम नहीं था। राम 'कृताञ्जलिः' (हाथ जोड़कर) खड़े हैं। यहाँ राम को 'दशरथात्मजः' कहा गया है, जो उनके कुल और पिता के प्रति दायित्व को रेखांकित करता है। उनका वाक्य 'धर्मयुक्तम्' है—अर्थात् उसमें क्रोध या द्वेष नहीं, बल्कि क्षमा और विनय है। राम का यह व्यवहार सिद्ध करता है कि वे वास्तव में 'मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम' हैं।
