वचनं राघवस्यैतद्धर्मयुक्तं समाहितम् ।
शुश्रुवुस्ताः स्त्रियः सर्वाः शोकोपहतचेतसः ॥२-३९-३९॥
vacanaṃ rāghavasyaitaddharmayuktaṃ samāhitam |
śuśruvustāḥ striyaḥ sarvāḥ śokopahatacetasaḥ ॥2-39-39॥
Translation
All those women, whose minds were struck by grief, heard these righteous and composed words of Raghava.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राघव (राम) के इस धर्मयुक्त और (चित्त को) एकाग्र करने वाले/शांत वचन को उन सभी स्त्रियों ने सुना, जिनके चित्त शोक से व्याकुल (आहत) थे।
English Commentary
The verse contrasts Rama's demeanor with that of the queens. Rama's speech is samāhitam (composed/balanced) and righteous, while the women are śoka-upahata-cetasaḥ (their minds destroyed/overpowered by grief). Hearing such noble words from the son who is being exiled unjustly acts as a catalyst for their breakdown. They witness his grace under pressure, which makes the impending separation even more unbearable for them.

यहाँ एक विषमता (contrast) दिखाई गई है। राम का वचन 'समाहितम्' (शांत/संतुलित) है, जबकि रानियों की स्थिति 'शोकोपहतचेतसः' (शोक से टूटे हुए मन वाली) है। राम की क्षमा-याचना ने उनके दुःख के बांध को तोड़ दिया। वे स्त्रियाँ जो अब तक शायद संयम बरते हुए थीं, राम की इस उदारता को सुनकर अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठती हैं। राम का 'धर्मयुक्त' आचरण उनके 'शोक' को कम करने के बजाय उसे और गहरा कर देता है क्योंकि उन्हें आभास होता है कि वे कितना महान पुत्र खो रही हैं।
