न तु एव अनागते काले देहाच् च्यवति जीवितम् ।
कैकेय्या क्लिश्यमानस्य मृत्युर् मम न विद्यते ॥ ॥२-३९-५॥
Na tu eva anāgate kāle dehāc cyavati jīvitam |
Kaikeyyā kliśyamānasya mṛtyur mama na vidyate ॥2-39-5॥
Translation
Surely, life does not leave the body before the appointed time. That is why, even though I am being tormented by Kaikeyi, death does not come to me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
निश्चित ही (मृत्यु का) समय आए बिना शरीर से प्राण नहीं निकलते। (तभी तो) कैकेयी द्वारा इतना क्लेश दिए जाने पर भी मेरी मृत्यु नहीं हो रही है।
English Commentary
Dasharatha expresses a death wish that is denied by destiny. He realizes a hard spiritual truth: the soul does not depart until its allotted time (anagate kale), regardless of the intensity of suffering. The commentary underscores the irony—the King views his survival not as a blessing, but as a curse. He specifically mentions being tormented by Kaikeyi, identifying her actions as the torture he wishes to escape. This verse poignantly captures the state of a man for whom life has become a burden, and death would be a mercy, yet he is forced by the laws of nature to endure the pain.

यह श्लोक दशरथ की चरम हताशा को व्यक्त करता है। वे मरना चाहते हैं ताकि इस असहनीय पीड़ा से मुक्ति मिल सके, लेकिन मृत्यु उनके वश में नहीं है। वे कहते हैं कि "अनागते काले" (समय आए बिना) प्राण नहीं जाते। यहाँ वे पुनः कैकेयी का नाम लेकर अपनी पीड़ा का स्रोत बताते हैं। उन्हें आश्चर्य और क्षोभ है कि इतना मानसिक आघात और अपमान सहने के बाद भी उनका हृदय फट क्यों नहीं रहा। वे अपनी जीवन-शक्ति को कोस रहे हैं जो उन्हें जीवित रखकर और अधिक दुःख भोगने पर मजबूर कर रही है। यह श्लोक बताता है कि कभी-कभी जीवित रहना मरने से अधिक कष्टदायक होता है।
