तस्मात्त्वयादप्रभृति निशेयं नियतात्मना ।
सह वध्वोपवस्तव्या दर्भप्रस्तरशायिना ॥२-४-२३॥
tasmāttvayādaprabhṛti niśeyaṁ niyatātmanā |
saha vadhvopavastavyā darbhaprastaraśāyinā ॥2-4-23॥
Translation
Therefore, from today onwards, you (Rama) must, with a controlled self, and along with your wife (Sita), spend this night fasting and sleeping on a bed of Kusha grass.

इसलिए, आज से ही तुम्हें (श्रीराम को) अपनी नियंत्रित आत्मा के साथ, अपनी वधू (सीता जी) के साथ, कुश के बिछौने पर सोते हुए, यह रात्रि उपवास करते हुए व्यतीत करनी चाहिए।
English Commentary
This verse from the fourth Sarga of Ayodhya Kanda is spoken by King Dasaratha to Lord Shri Rama while instructing him on the necessary vows and observances preceding his consecration as the Crown Prince. King Dasaratha informs Shri Rama that the coronation is to take place the next day under the Pushya constellation, and therefore, both he and Goddess Sita must follow a disciplined regimen on the preceding night. The term 'niyatātmanā' (one with a controlled self) is used for Shri Rama, suggesting that while he is already self-controlled, he is still required to undertake this vow. The wife, Sita, is also to participate in this observance with him. Sleeping on a bed of Kusha grass (darbha) and fasting (upavastavyā) are symbolic acts of purification and austerity performed before a significant ritual like a royal consecration. This instruction not only shows Shri Rama's spiritual preparation for the impending high office but also establishes that personal and religious purity is essential before taking on the duties of a king (Rājya-dharma). The verse highlights the urgency and the sacred nature associated with Shri Rama's imminent coronation.

अयोध्याकाण्ड के चौथे सर्ग का यह श्लोक महाराज दशरथ द्वारा भगवान श्रीराम को युवराज-पद के अभिषेक से पूर्व आवश्यक व्रत-नियमों का निर्देश देते समय कहा गया है। महाराज दशरथ श्रीराम को बताते हैं कि कल पुष्य नक्षत्र में उनका अभिषेक किया जाएगा, और इसलिए अभिषेक की पूर्व रात्रि में उन्हें और देवी सीता जी को संयमित जीवनशैली का पालन करना होगा। 'नियतात्मना' (नियंत्रित आत्मा वाले) शब्द श्रीराम के लिए प्रयुक्त हुआ है, जो दर्शाता है कि वह पहले से ही आत्मसंयमी हैं, फिर भी उन्हें यह व्रत करना है। वधू, अर्थात सीता जी को भी इस व्रत में उनके साथ सम्मिलित होना है। कुश के बिछौने पर सोना और उपवास करना राज्याभिषेक जैसे महत्वपूर्ण अनुष्ठान से पहले शुद्धि और तपस्या का प्रतीक है। यह निर्देश न केवल आगामी राजपद के लिए श्रीराम की आध्यात्मिक तैयारी को दर्शाता है, बल्कि यह भी स्थापित करता है कि राजधर्म का पालन करने से पहले व्यक्तिगत और धार्मिक शुद्धता आवश्यक है। यह श्लोक श्रीराम के राज्याभिषेक की तात्कालिकता और उससे जुड़ी पवित्रता को प्रकट करता है।
