श्रुत्वा पुष्येण पुत्रस्य यौवराज्याभिषेचनम् ।
प्राणायामेन पुरुषं ध्यायमाना जनार्दनम् ॥२-४-३३॥
śrutvā puṣyeṇa putrasya yauvarājyābhiṣecanam |
prāṇāyāmena puruṣaṃ dhyāyamānā janārdanam ॥2-4-33॥
Translation
Having heard about her son's coronation under the Pushya star, she was meditating on the Supreme Being, Lord Janardana (Vishnu), through Pranayama (breath control).
हिंदी अनुवाद
पुष्य नक्षत्र में पुत्र (राम) का यौवराज्य अभिषेक होगा, यह सुनकर वह (कौशल्या) प्राणायाम के द्वारा परम पुरुष भगवान विष्णु (जनार्दन) का ध्यान कर रही थीं।
English Commentary
This verse is theologically significant. It specifies the deity of worship as Janardana (Vishnu), the protector/sustainer. Kausalya uses Pranayama (yogic breath control) to steady her mind for meditation, indicating she is well-versed in spiritual practices and not just ritualistic religion. Her motivation is the news of the Pushya star coronation. In the context of the epic, the mother prays to the Cosmic Vishnu to protect the Incarnate Vishnu (Rama), highlighting the duality of Rama being both a human son and a divine entity, though here the human aspect dominates the mother's perception.
