एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु कौसल्या चिरकालाभिकाङ्क्षितम् ।
हर्षबाष्पकलं वाक्यमिदं राममभाषत ॥२-४-३८॥
etacchrutvā tu kausalyā cirakālābhikāṅkṣitam |
harṣabāṣpakalaṃ vākyamidaṃ rāmamabhāṣata ॥2-4-38॥
Translation
Hearing this news which had been desired for a long time, Kausalya spoke these words to Rama, her voice indistinct with tears of joy.

चिरकाल से अभिलाषित इस समाचार को (राम के मुख से) सुनकर, कौशल्या ने हर्ष के आंसुओं से गद्गद वाणी में राम से यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
Although Kausalya knew the news, hearing Rama confirm the rituals for "tomorrow" makes it real. The phrase chirakalabhikankshitam (desired for a long time) underscores that this is the culmination of her life's purpose. Her reaction is visceral; she speaks with a voice choked with "tears of joy" (harshabashpakalam). This emotional release contrasts with her earlier silent meditation. It captures the quintessential maternal emotion—overwhelming relief and pride that her son has finally achieved what destiny promised.

यद्यपि कौशल्या ने यह खबर दूसरों से सुन ली थी, परंतु अपने पुत्र के मुख से इसकी पुष्टि सुनना एक अलग ही सुख है। 'चिरकालाभिकाङ्क्षितम्' (लंबे समय से जिसकी इच्छा थी) - यह शब्द कौशल्या के जीवन की तपस्या को समेटे हुए है। उनका पूरा जीवन इसी दिन की प्रतीक्षा में बीता है। उनकी प्रतिक्रिया अत्यंत मानवीय है - 'हर्षबाष्पकलं' (खुशी के आंसुओं के कारण अस्पष्ट वाणी)। अत्यधिक सुख में गला भर आता है और शब्द नहीं निकलते; वाल्मीकि ने यहाँ उसी मनोवैज्ञानिक स्थिति का सूक्ष्म चित्रण किया है।
