वत्स राम चिरं जीव हतास्ते परिपन्थिनः ।
ज्ञातीन्मे त्वं श्रियायुक्तः सुमित्रायाश्च नन्दय ॥२-४-३९॥
vatsa rāma ciraṃ jīva hatāste paripanthinaḥ |
jñātīnme tvaṃ śriyāyuktaḥ sumitrāyāśca nandaya ॥2-4-39॥
Translation
O my darling Son, Rama, may you live long! May your enemies be vanquished! May you, endowed with glory, bring delight to my relatives and to those of Sumitra (as well)!

ओ मेरे प्रिय पुत्र राम, तुम लंबे समय तक जीवित रहो! तुम्हारे दुश्मन नष्ट हों! तुम, जो ऐश्वर्य में परिपूर्ण हो, मेरे प्रियजनों और सुमित्रा के प्रियजनों को भी आनंदित करो।
English Commentary
This verse contains Kaushalya's first articulated blessing, a poignant mixture of maternal love, royal expectations, and large-hearted generosity. The Blessing of Longevity and Victory: 'Vatsa Rāma ciraṃ jīva' (O Son, Rama, may you live long!) is the quintessential maternal blessing. 'Hatāste paripanthinaḥ' (May your enemies be vanquished!) is a traditional blessing for a warrior and a ruler. The Role of Glory (Śrī): 'Śriyā yuktaḥ' (endowed with prosperity/glory) refers to Śrī, symbolizing wealth and sovereignty. The Greatness of Kaushalya's Heart: By including 'Jñātīnme' (my relatives) and 'Sumitrāyāśca' (and those of Sumitra), she demonstrates a noble and selfless character. Kaushalya's blessing wishes for Rama’s longevity and victory, regal glory, and the fulfillment of his duty to delight the entire extended royal family.
