इत्युक्त्वा लक्ष्मणं रामो मातरावभिवाद्य च ।
अभ्यनुज्ञाप्य सीतां च जगाम स्वं निवेश्नम् ॥२-४-४५॥
ityuktvā lakṣmaṇaṁ rāmo mātarāvabhivādya ca |
abhyanujñāpya sītāṁ ca jagāma svaṁ niveśnam ॥2-4-45॥
Translation
Having spoken thus to Lakshmana, Śrī Rāma bowed down to his two mothers (Kausalya and Sumitra), and after taking permission from Sītā, he went to his own residence (palace).

लक्ष्मण से इस प्रकार कहकर, श्री राम ने दोनों माताओं (कौसल्या और सुमित्रा) को प्रणाम किया और सीताजी से अनुमति लेकर अपने महल (निवास स्थान) को चले गए।
English Commentary
This verse concludes the fourth Sarga of the Ayodhyakanda and showcases Śrī Rāma's dutiful character. After expressing his profound love for Lakshmana and his intention to share the kingdom, Śrī Rāma undertook the necessary and courteous actions in the context of his impending coronation. Firstly, he bowed down to both mothers—his own mother Kausalya and Lakshmana's mother Sumitra—indicating his equal respect and affection for both. Subsequently, he took permission from Sītā. This small action demonstrates Śrī Rāma's respect for Sītā and establishes that he valued his wife's opinion or consent even before making major decisions, even if it was a simple act of going to his private palace. The verse also tells us that even in the joyful atmosphere of the coronation preparations, Śrī Rāma did not forget his social and familial duties. This reaffirms his adherence to Maryādā (propriety) and ideal conduct, ensuring that he always accorded due respect to everyone before departing for his own residence.

यह श्लोक अयोध्याकाण्ड के चौथे सर्ग का समापन करता है और श्री राम के कर्तव्यपरायण चरित्र को दर्शाता है। लक्ष्मण के प्रति अपने गहरे प्रेम और राज्य सौंपने की इच्छा व्यक्त करने के बाद, श्री राम ने अपने आगामी राज्याभिषेक के संदर्भ में आवश्यक और शिष्ट आचरण किया। सबसे पहले उन्होंने दोनों माताओं—अपनी जननी कौसल्या और लक्ष्मण की माता सुमित्रा—को प्रणाम किया। यह दोनों माताओं के प्रति उनका समान आदर और स्नेह दर्शाता है। इसके पश्चात्, उन्होंने अपनी पत्नी सीताजी से अनुमति ली। यह छोटी-सी क्रिया सीताजी के प्रति श्री राम के सम्मान को दर्शाती है और यह स्थापित करती है कि बड़े निर्णय लेने से पहले भी वे अपनी धर्मपत्नी की राय या सहमति को महत्व देते थे, भले ही वह अपने निजी महल में जाने का एक साधारण कार्य ही क्यों न हो। यह श्लोक यह भी बताता है कि राज्याभिषेक की खुशी के माहौल में भी श्री राम ने अपने सामाजिक और पारिवारिक दायित्वों को नहीं भुलाया। यह उनकी मर्यादा और आदर्श आचरण को पुष्ट करता है कि वे सदैव सभी को समुचित सम्मान देते थे, और इसके बाद ही वे अपने निजी निवास की ओर प्रस्थान करते हैं।
