Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तमुवाच ततः सूतो राजा त्वां द्रष्टु मिच्छति ।
श्रुत्वा प्रमाणमत्र त्वं गमनायेतराय वा ॥२-४-७॥
tamuvāca tataḥ sūto rājā tvāṃ draṣṭu micchati |
śrutvā pramāṇamatra tvaṃ gamanāyetarāya vā ॥2-4-7॥
Translation
Then the charioteer (Sumantra) spoke to him (Rama): 'The King desires to see you. Having heard this, you must now decide whether to go (to him) or to refrain from going (i.e., you are the authority to decide the next course of action).'

तब सारथी (सुमन्त्र) ने उनसे (राम से) कहा, 'महाराज आपसे मिलना चाहते हैं। यह सुनकर अब आप यहाँ जाने के लिए अथवा न जाने के लिए (जो उचित हो) उसे प्रमाण मानिए।'
English Commentary
This verse is from the Ayodhya Kanda, Sarga 4, of the Valmiki Ramayana. Here, the charioteer Sumantra is responding to Shri Rama's inquisitive query. When asked the reason for his return, Sumantra replies simply and clearly: 'rājā tvāṃ draṣṭu micchati' (The King desires to see you). He offers no specific instruction or explanation for the summons, merely conveying the King's wish. Following this, Sumantra politely defers to Rama, saying, 'śrutvā pramāṇamatra tvaṃ gamanāyetarāya vā' — that is, having heard the King's desire, Rama is now the authority to decide whether to go or to refrain from going. This statement not only underscores Sumantra's dutiful nature but also signifies the respect accorded to Rama as the Crown Prince, who is deemed capable of deciding the appropriate course of action. Though the King's message is effectively a command, Sumantra grants Rama the courtesy of making the decision. This episode confirms the urgency of the confidential discussion about to take place between the King and Rama.

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि रामायण के अयोध्याकाण्ड के चौथे सर्ग का है। इसमें सारथी सुमन्त्र, श्रीराम के शंकापूर्ण प्रश्न का उत्तर दे रहे हैं। राम के पूछने पर कि उनके वापस आने का क्या कारण है, सुमन्त्र अत्यंत सरल और स्पष्ट शब्दों में उत्तर देते हैं: 'राजा त्वां द्रष्टु मिच्छति' (महाराज आपको देखना चाहते हैं)। इस कथन में राजा की ओर से कोई विशेष निर्देश या कारण नहीं बताया गया है, केवल उनकी इच्छा व्यक्त की गई है। इसके बाद, सुमन्त्र शिष्टाचारवश राम से कहते हैं कि, 'श्रुत्वा प्रमाणमत्र त्वं गमनायेतराय वा' अर्थात्, राजा की इच्छा सुनकर अब आप स्वयं ही यह निश्चित करें कि आपको जाना चाहिए या नहीं। यह कथन न केवल सुमन्त्र के कर्तव्यपरायण चरित्र को दर्शाता है, बल्कि राम को युवराज के रूप में दिया गया सम्मान भी प्रकट करता है, जहाँ राम स्वयं यह निर्णय लेने में सक्षम माने जाते हैं कि राजा के पास जाना उचित है या नहीं। यद्यपि राजा का संदेश एक आदेश के समान ही होता है, सुमन्त्र ने राम को सम्मान देते हुए निर्णय लेने की स्वतंत्रता दी। यह प्रसंग राजा और राम के बीच होने वाली गोपनीय चर्चा की अनिवार्यता को पुष्ट करता है।
