चतुर् दश हि वर्षाणि वस्तव्यानि वने त्वया ।
तानि उपक्रमितव्यानि यानि देव्या असि चोदितः ॥ ॥२-४०-१२॥
catur daśa hi varṣāṇi vastavyāni vane tvayā |
tāni upakramitavyāni yāni devyā asi coditaḥ ॥2-40-12॥
Translation
"For fourteen years are to be dwelt by you in the forest. That period, for which you have been urged by the Queen (Kaikeyi), must be commenced now."

"आपको वन में चौदह वर्ष निवास करना है। देवी (कैकेयी) द्वारा जो आज्ञा दी गई है, उस अवधि का प्रारम्भ अब होना चाहिए।"
English Commentary
Sumantra formalizes the exile. He mentions the specific duration (fourteen years) and the source of the command (the Queen/Kaikeyi). By attributing the order to the Devi (Kaikeyi) rather than the King, Sumantra subtly acknowledges that this is a result of the boons, not Dasharatha's will. This verse marks the official transition from Prince Rama of Ayodhya to Rama the forest dweller; the clock for the fourteen years starts ticking now.

सुमन्त्र यहाँ कठोर सत्य का उच्चारण करते हैं। वे आधिकारिक रूप से वनवास की शुरुआत की घोषणा कर रहे हैं। 'देव्या असि चोदितः' (देवी कैकेयी द्वारा प्रेरित) कहकर वे यह स्पष्ट करते हैं कि यह यात्रा राजा दशरथ की इच्छा नहीं, अपितु कैकेयी की हठ का परिणाम है। यह श्लोक राजमहल के जीवन और वनवास के जीवन के बीच की विभाजक रेखा (dividing line) है।
